Sofya\u2019dan J\u00fcri \u00d6zel \u00d6d\u00fcl\u00fc\u2019n\u00fc kazanarak d\u00f6nen film 13 May\u0131s\u2019ta g\u00f6sterime \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sabahattin Ali unutulmad\u0131. T\u0131pk\u0131 genellikle d\u00f6nemin devlet politikalar\u0131na ve e\u011filimlerine muhalif \u00e7izgide olan fikirleri y\u00fcz\u00fcnden, isimsiz katillerce infaz edilen t\u00fcm yazarlar ve \u015fairler gibi. Nasyonalizm, fa\u015fizm gibi femme-fatale\u2019ler ile fl\u00f6rt eden devletlerdi bunlar. Sabahattin Ali de bu t\u00fcr bir ili\u015fkiyi destekleyenleri g\u00f6z\u00fcnde \u201ck\u00f6t\u00fc adam\u201dd\u0131, bir tehditti. Nihayetinde \u201cpis bir gom\u00fcnist\u201d idi. 1948\u2019de T\u00fcrkiye\u2019den Bulgaristan\u2019a ka\u00e7ma te\u015febb\u00fcs\u00fc s\u0131ras\u0131nda vurulup \u00f6ld\u00fcr\u00fcld\u00fc. Katili daha sonra bu cinayeti itiraf etti. Sabahattin Ali\u2019nin Bulgaristan s\u0131n\u0131r\u0131ndan g\u00fcvenli bir bi\u00e7imde ge\u00e7mesine yard\u0131m etmesi gereken ki\u015fi idi katil. Sabahattin Ali g\u00fcvendi\u011fi, can\u0131n\u0131 emanet etti\u011fi adam taraf\u0131ndan \u00f6ld\u00fcr\u00fclm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fc. Katil d\u00f6rt y\u0131l hapse mahkum edildi. Hi\u00e7 \u00e7ekmeyece\u011fi bir ceza. Birka\u00e7 hafta sonra genel aftan yararlan\u0131p serbest kald\u0131. \u00c7ok sonralar\u0131 katilin Milli \u0130stihbarat g\u00f6revlisi oldu\u011fu ortaya \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131. Ba\u015fka bir s\u00f6ylenti de kendisinin ger\u00e7ek katil olmad\u0131\u011f\u0131, yaln\u0131zca su\u00e7u \u00fcstlendi\u011fiydi.<\/p>\n

Sabahattin Ali\u2019nin \u00f6l\u00fc bedeni 2 Nisan 1948\u2019de Bulgaristan s\u0131n\u0131r\u0131 yak\u0131nlar\u0131nda bulundu. 63 y\u0131l sonra Sofya Film Festivali\u2019nde onun bir \u00f6yk\u00fcs\u00fcnden uyarlanan filmi seyrediyor olmam\u0131zda ironik bir yan vard\u0131. Bu, Sabahattin Ali\u2019nin asl\u0131nda s\u0131n\u0131r\u0131 sa\u011f salim ge\u00e7ti\u011fi ve onu durdurmak, sesini k\u0131smak isteyenlerin ba\u015far\u0131s\u0131z oldu\u011fu anlam\u0131na gelmiyor muydu?<\/p>\n

Kar Beyaz (White as Snow) Sabahattin Ali\u2019nin Ayran adl\u0131 \u00f6yk\u00fcs\u00fcnden serbest\u00e7e uyarlanm\u0131\u015f. Ayran, yaln\u0131zca yo\u011furt, su ve tuzla yap\u0131lan bir i\u00e7ecek. Basit ama lezzetli, t\u0131pk\u0131 filmin kendisi gibi.<\/p>\n

Ayran gibi be\u015f alt\u0131 kitap sayfas\u0131 uzunlu\u011funda bir \u00f6yk\u00fc s\u00f6z konusu oldu\u011funda serbest uyarlama yapmak bir zorunluluk. Ama hikayeye yaplan yeni eklemelere, yeni karakterlere, gidilen yer ve zaman de\u011fi\u015fikliklerine ra\u011fmen Kar Beyaz\u2019\u0131n ba\u015far\u0131l\u0131 bir uyarlama oldu\u011funu s\u00f6ylemek laz\u0131m. Bu sebebi ise \u00f6yk\u00fcn\u00fcn \u00f6z\u00fcn\u00fc pelik\u00fcle aktarabilmi\u015f ve do\u011fru duyguyu perdeye yans\u0131tabilmi\u015f olmas\u0131.<\/p>\n

Ayran\u2019da \u00f6yk\u00fc 1940\u2019larda ge\u00e7er. Kar Beyaz\u2019da \u00e7ok belirli olmamakla birlikte 1970\u2019lere, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019de ikinci kez ger\u00e7ekle\u015fen askeri darbe d\u00f6nemine gidiyoruz. Mekan, Kuzey Karadeniz\u2019in da\u011fl\u0131k kesimleridir. 12 ya\u015f\u0131ndaki bir \u00e7ocu\u011fun, Hasan\u2019\u0131n \u00f6yk\u00fcs\u00fc anlat\u0131lmaktad\u0131r. Ayran satmak i\u00e7in eviyle anayol aras\u0131nda kalan kilometrelerce mesafeyi her g\u00fcn kat etmek zorundad\u0131r. \u00dcstelik ayran satmay\u0131 hayal etti\u011fi yolcular\u0131 ta\u015f\u0131yan minib\u00fcs yaln\u0131zca g\u00fcnde iki kere ge\u00e7mektedir bu yoldan. Babas\u0131 hapse girdikten sonra ailesi fakir d\u00fc\u015fm\u00fc\u015f ve kasabada \u00e7al\u0131\u015fan annesi evden uzaktayken iki k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck karde\u015fine bakmak da Hasan\u2019\u0131n k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck omuzlar\u0131na ta\u015f\u0131mak zorunda oldu\u011fu bir sorumlulu\u011fa d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015fm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr.<\/p>\n

Filmin oda\u011f\u0131nda Hasan olsa da, filmde ba\u015fka paralel hikayeler de yer al\u0131yor. Baba, anne, ba\u015fka bir k\u00f6ydem ya\u015fl\u0131 bir adam, tayini bu k\u0131rsal b\u00f6lgeye \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131\u011f\u0131 i\u00e7in mutsuz b\u00fcy\u00fck \u015fehirli gen\u00e7 bir m\u00fchendis vesaire\u2026<\/p>\n

Y\u00f6netmen\u00a0Selim G\u00fcne\u015f\u2019in 20 y\u0131ll\u0131k bir foto\u011fraf\u00e7\u0131l\u0131k ge\u00e7mi\u015fi var. Bu uzmanl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131n yol a\u00e7t\u0131\u011f\u0131 tav\u0131r filmde de g\u00f6zleniyor. Hikayesini kelimeler yerine sinematografi ile anlatmay\u0131 ye\u011fliyor. Hem sineman\u0131n hem foto\u011fraf\u0131n birbirine benzeyen hikaye anlatma ara\u00e7lar\u0131 oldu\u011funun ve bunlar\u0131 bir filmde bir araya getirmeye kalk\u0131\u015fman\u0131n bazen k\u00f6t\u00fc sonu\u00e7lar do\u011furabilece\u011finin fark\u0131nda. G\u00fcne\u015f, s\u0131n\u0131r b\u00f6lgesinde kalmak elinden gelenin en iyisini yapm\u0131\u015f. Foto\u011fraf\u0131n dura\u011fanl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 nispeten bertaraf etti\u011fi s\u00f6ylenebilir. Evet, Kar Beyaz ana-ak\u0131m filmlerle kar\u015f\u0131la\u015ft\u0131r\u0131ld\u0131\u011f\u0131nda hala yava\u015f bir film ve gi\u015fede bilet satmakta zorlanabilir. Ama hangi festival filmi bunu ya\u015fam\u0131yor ki? Sanat sinemas\u0131 yapman\u0131n dezavantajlar\u0131ndan biri de bu i\u015fte. Bu ayn\u0131 zamanda seyirciye \u015funu diyen bir i\u015faret levhas\u0131: \u0130zledi\u011finiz film t\u00fcketim k\u00fclt\u00fcr\u00fcn\u00fcn ve vah\u015fi kapitalizmin bir \u00fcr\u00fcn\u00fc de\u011fildir.<\/p>\n

Selim G\u00fcne\u015f filmdeki bir plan\u0131 1938 do\u011fumlu \u00c7ek foto\u011fraf\u00e7\u0131 Joseph Koudelka\u2019n\u0131n bir foto\u011fraf\u0131ndan esinlenerek \u00e7ekmi\u015f. Bu sahnede jandarmalar\u0131n babay\u0131 d\u00fc\u011f\u00fcn evinden g\u00f6t\u00fcr\u00fc\u015f\u00fcne tan\u0131k oluruz. \u0130kinci bir g\u00f6nderme de Michelangelo\u2019nun \u201cYarat\u0131l\u0131\u015f\u201d resmine yap\u0131l\u0131yor.<\/p>\n

Kar Beyaz, sinema duygusundan yoksun baz\u0131 anlar\u0131na ra\u011fmen (mesela final), bir ilk film olarak sayg\u0131m\u0131z\u0131 kesinlikle hak ediyor. Yaln\u0131zca sinematografisiyle de\u011fil, tavr\u0131yla da\u2026 Akla Nuri Bilge Ceylan ve Semih Kaplano\u011flu\u2019nu getiren bir tav\u0131r bu. Kar Beyaz\u2019\u0131n bu y\u00f6netmenlerin filmleriyle ayn\u0131 kulvarda oldu\u011fu s\u00f6ylenebilir. Ama kar\u015f\u0131la\u015ft\u0131rmak gerekirse G\u00fcne\u015f\u2019in daha konvansiyonel ve geleneksel bir hikaye \u00e7izgisi tercih etti\u011fi s\u00f6ylenebilir. Filmde kullan\u0131lan m\u00fcziklerin ola\u011fan\u00fcst\u00fc oldu\u011funu eklemeden bitirmemek laz\u0131m. Filmi yaln\u0131zca m\u00fcziklerini dinlemek i\u00e7in bile ikinciye seyredebilirsiniz. Yetenekli m\u00fczisyen Mircan, k\u00f6kenleri T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin kuzey-do\u011fusuna ve G\u00fcrcistan\u2019a uzanan halk \u015fark\u0131lar\u0131yla harikalar yaratm\u0131\u015f. Zaten 2010\u2019da 47. Antalya Alt\u0131n Portakal Film Festivali\u2019nde En \u0130yi M\u00fczik \u00d6d\u00fcl\u00fc Kar Beyaz\u2019\u0131n olmu\u015ftu.<\/p>\n

As a Debut Movie, White as Snow Deserves Our Respect<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sabahattin Ali is not forgotten\u2026 And neither are all the writers and poets who have been assassinated by anonymous killers because of their ideas and thoughts, which were mainly opposed to the politics of the government of their period, which had been flirting with a dangerous femme-fatale, nationalism or fascism.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the eyes of the increasing supporters of that kind of affair from the right wing, Sabahattin Ali was also an antagonist and a threat. He was a \u201cdirty communist\u201d after all. So he was shot to kill during his attempt to escape from Turkey to Bulgaria in 1948. Later his killer confessed that he killed Sabahattin Ali. He was the man who was supposed to help Sabahattin Ali to pass through Bulgaria safely. He was convicted for 4 years. Years he never endured. Because he was free after several weeks. His freedom was due to general pardon. Later it was revealed that he worked for the National Security. There also were rumours that he had not been the real killer, but only took the crime upon himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sabahattin Ali\u2019s dead body was found near the Bulgarian border on 2nd of April 1948. Isn\u2019t it ironic that we saw a movie based on one of his stories at The Sofia Film Festival 63 years later? Doesn\u2019t this mean that after all Sabahattin Ali successfully crossed the border and all the attempts to stop him and his voice have failed?<\/span><\/p>\n

White as Snow (Kar Beyaz)* is loosely based on one of Sabahattin Ali\u2019s stories: Ayran. Ayran is a Turkish drink which is made of just water, yoghurt and salt. It is simple, but delicious, just like the movie itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this situation, mentioning that the film is \u201cloosely\u201d adapted is a necessity, because Ayran is a short story which only occupies 5 or 6 pages of a book. But despite the new characters, extra additions to the story, change of time and location, White as Snow is still a successful adaptation. Because it manages to accomplish the most important task an adaptation requires. White as Snow transfers the very essence of the story to pellicule and reflects the right feeling to the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ayran the story takes place during 1940s. In White as Snow, though it is not that obvious, the time is the early 1970s, during the second coup in Turkey. The location is the highland of North Black Sea. This is the story of a twelve-year old boy who has to walk miles every day in order to sell ayran by the main road, where a passenger van passes only two times a day. After his father goes to prison, the family falls into poverty and Hasan has to take care of his two little brothers, while their mother is away working. The focus is on Hasan but the film has many parallel stories in it \u2013 the father, the mother, an old man from another village, an engineer from the big city who feels unhappy about his assignment to this rural part and so on\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

The director of the movie, Selim Gunes, is a photographer for 20 years now. The attitude caused by his profession can easily be seen in the movie. He prefers to tell his story with cinematography more than with words. He is aware that although both photography and cinema are similar story-telling vehicles, it can sometimes be dangerous to combine these two in a movie. Gunes makes his best not to leave border lines. We can say that he avoids the stability of photography. Yes, it is still a slow movie on main-stream standards and it is going to face difficulties selling tickets. But which festival film doesn\u2019t? This is one of the inevitable results of making an art movie and is also a sign telling the audience: The film you are watching is not a product of consummation and wild capitalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, despite its lack of cinematic feeling in some certain moments (the final, for example), as a debut movie White as Snow deserves our respect not only for its cinematography but also for its attitude. It is also this attitude that reminds us of Nuri Bilge Ceylan\u2019s and Semih Kaplanoglu\u2019s movies. It is obvious that White as Snow walks the same path as these directors\u2019 works. But when it comes to comparison we must say that Selim Gunes chooses a more conventional and traditional story line (Nuri Bilge Ceylan\u2019s Three Monkeys is only an exception in this comparison).<\/span><\/p>\n

The songs used in the movie are really marvellous. You can watch it twice just to listen to its music again. The talented musician Mircan did a great job with her folklore songs which find their roots in North-east Turkey and Georgia. The film also received the Best Film Music Award of the\u00a047th Antalya Film Festival in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n
